Dealing Tiles

Dealing tiles in Mahjong starts with the tiles being placed face down on the table and being shuffled. Once the tiles have been shuffled Each player begins seleting the appropriate number of tiles, creating two rows of tiles stacked two deep in front of them. The length of the row will depend on the number of tiles being used.

- 136 tile game: 17 tiles for each player.
- 144 tile game: 18 tiles for each player.
- 148 tile game: 19 tiles for the dealer and the player opposite them and 18 tiles for the remaining players.
- 152 tile game: 19 tiles for each player.

Before the game can begin the dealer must throw three dice and add up their total. Starting with the dealer and counting clockwise a player's row is chosen. At the right edge of the players tiles the number of tiles equal to the dice totaled are counted out and shifted to the right.

Each player takes 4 tiles to the left of the divided tiles which will leave each player with 12 tiles for a 13 tile variation and 16 tiles for a 16 tile variation of Mahjong. For the 13 tile variation of Mahjong each player will pick one more tile to bring their hand to 13 tiles.

The Mahjong board is now ready for play. New tiles picked by the player will be taken from the wall where the dealing left off. There are certain times in Mahjong that tiles will be taken from the other end of the wall. This is refered to as the back end of the wall. Some variations of Mahjong these tiles are known as the dead wall and maybe visually seperated from the main part of the wall.
