Game Wind and Prevailing Wind
Determining the Game wind and Prevailing wind is an important step before the game starts. The Game wind is determined by the dealer. The dealer's wind is always East, and moving round the table to the right with South, West and North for the player to the left of the dealer. At the start of each new round the Game wind changes unless the dealer won the previous round.
The Prevailing wind is usually set to east at the start of a mahjong game. The prevailing wind will change when each player has lost a round and the starting dealer is the dealer again.
Mahjong set will usually include a Game wind and seperate Prevailing wind markers. The Prevailing Wind marker is typically a die marked with the wind characters on it that is placed in a holder. The holder has a pointer that can be pointed towards the dealer showing which way the wind is for that round.
The Game wind and Prevailing wind should not be confused with the wind tiles that are a member of the Flower tile group.
